Why I canceled my ChatGPT Subscription
I’ve been a big fan of ChatGPT for a number of years now, and have had the $20 per month subscription for quite a while. But I’m cancelling my subscription, and will explain why.
Don’t get me wrong, ChatGPT is fantastic. I’ve created prototypes, done tons of really great research and explored ideas with it, was able to successfully dislodge a small piece of a tortilla chip that was stuck in my throat (it suggested eating a banana, that worked great!). Overall I have been very happy with ChatGPT’s capabilities.
But I also subscribe to Gemini and Claude for several reasons. And over the past few months I’ve noticed a steady shift in which of these tools I’ve been using. Claude Sonnet 4.5 and Gemini 3 are such incredibly good models (not to mention Opus 4.5, wow!), and I don’t see a need to pay for all three of these chat products, so I decided it was time to scale back to just Gemini and Claude for now. But I should note, while I won’t be using OpenAI’s chat interface, ChatGPT, as much, I will still use the OpenAI API for prototypes and hobby products.
So why did I pick Gemini and Claude? I love Gemini for its incredible image creation, which is far superior to ChatGPT’s images. And my subscription to Gemini is bundled with my Google one which gives me more Google storage space so that’s just nice to have the bundle. Also, having Gemini 3 pro available in all of my Google products is really powerful. Claude on the other hand gives me access to use Claude Code with the subscription, which is amazing for coding, and also a powerful tool for the desktop.
I might go back to ChatGPT at some point but for now I’m going to try sticking with these two!
